Acute glaucoma

Acute glaucoma is an eye disease caused by intraocular pressure level and it occur fast, without any warn. The cause of this disease are divided onto primary cause, heredity, and secondary eye disease. Why this is occur to a patient? Here are the predisposition factors: for primary cause in this disease commonly midriatic drug use, live in the dark place for long time, and emotional. Then, secondary cause are commonly caused by cataract, uveitis, pupil occlusion, or post operation of intraocular.


How about sign and symptoms in this disease

  1. Pain from the eye spread to head
  2. Nausea and vomit
  3. Redness
  4. Eye acuity is low and sometimes rainbow look alike is seen.
  5. The eye ball is palpable hard.
  6. If this disease will not overcome soon, the complication will be worse, the patient with acute glaucoma will be blind.

The only way to cure this disease are reduce the intraocular pressure by acetazolamide 500 mg continued 4 times 250 mg, glycerin 50% 4 times 100-150 ml inside the orange liquid, beta adrenergic blocker 0,25-0,5 % twice a day and KCl 3 times 0,5 g a day. Corticosteroid eye drop and antibiotic is prescribed to reduce the inflammation.

For primary form is given pilocarpine 2% every one hour in the attacked eye, and 3 times a day for the opposite eye. The patient should be hospitalized and eye operation performed.
